Raupō

Raupō (bulrush, cattail, Typha orientalis) forms dense summer-green masses of erect spongy leaves with tall brown flower heads and provides shelter for wetland birds. Māori used the pollen and starchy underground stems as food, and the leaves for thatching and buoyant canoes called mōkihi and to make poi.
