Seagreen webcap/elegant blue webcap (Cortinarius rotundisporus) is part of the large Cortinarius genus. It is found in manuka and kanuka forests. The cap often has a slimy surface and is a subtle shade of steel blue when young, developing a yellow colouring at its centre as it matures.
Similarly, the gills are bluish when immature, changing to pale brown as they age. The stem of the fungus often has a rust coloured band, and the rounded shape of the spores is described in the scientific name: rotundisporus.
Always an interesting find, these seagreen webcaps were seen by DOC ranger Deb Price while on a stoat line in the Awaroa Inlet area.
