A blue penguin found hungry and dehydrated is being rehabilitated at Natureland.<\/p>\n

The penguin was picked up in Marahau\u00a0and handed\u00a0into the Department of Conservation before being taken into care by the Tahunanui zoo.<\/p>\n

Natureland keeper Lena Olley said he didn’t have any obvious signs of injuries but he was starving.<\/p>\n

Plans to release him back into the wild\u00a0meant ensuring the bird had\u00a0little contact with people and keeping him waterproof.<\/p>\n

A penguin\u00a0losing its water-resistance could be detrimental to its survival.<\/p>\n

“We get some seawater from the ocean and make a pool\u00a0and we make sure\u00a0we put him in there regularly.”<\/p>\n

Olley said she couldn’t be certain why the bird\u00a0was found in poor condition but some reasons included food supply, ocean temperatures and\u00a0disease.<\/p>\n
