Eric Landers - Project Janszoon

Eric Lander

Eric works as tautoko (support) for the education programme in Golden Bay.

Working alongside Brooke, Eric assists the teachers and students at Golden Bay High School and Motupipi Primary School. He also helps with the Abel Tasman Youth Ambassador programme, sharing his understanding of Mātauranga Māori.

From the North Island, Eric affiliates to Ngāti Porou, Tainui and Tauranga Moana. He has a background as a school guidance cousellor, and sea kayak and walking guide, spending many years working in the Abel Tasman National Park.

After working for two years in the small Rarotongan island of Aitutaki, Eric and his family moved to Golden Bay, as they wanted to continue the ‘island feel’. He first worked at Collingwood Area School and in 2021 moved to Golden Bay High School as a form teacher working intensively with a small group of students. He is also involved in waka ama and mau rākau programmes, helping rangatahi (youth) build their identity.

Eric loves the kaupapa of Project Janszoon’s education programme and says it is empowering to see how self motivated the youth involved are – learning, getting involved, and helping each other.
